The Moving Gallery is pleased to invite you to an exhibition of work by Newcastle based artist David Teager-Portman.

Teager-Portmans work specialises mainly in sculpture and he is currently based in Newcastle city centre at the New Bridge Studio. His practice is an assemblage of made sculpted forms and found objects articulated in coherent form. Repetition and component pieces are used, as are interchangeable elemental sections, solidarity as well as containment of form are considered alongside stacking of different sections in an overall exploratory working process. Veiled appropriation and direct representation in combination are drawn upon as well as visual punctuation with blocks of colour.

Traditional and fundamental issues of weight, balance, movement, and momentum are examined in poetic representation coupled with a scale, which addresses the familiarity of personal proportion; human scale is interconnected with the intervention of human presence in work. The spiritual balance of a piece of work is as important as its relation and attempt at understanding transcendence overall in society. The message portrayed by materials and material heritage are geographically personal, exemplified by repeated use of concrete, seeking lineage from architectural movements. Psychology and Northern European folklore can be used as descriptive devices relating to central ideology with particular interest in Jamais vu, Déjà vu, Presque vu, Capgras delusion, Reduplicative Paramnesia, Bilocation, The Doppelgänger and The Vardøger.

"I am interested in creating sculptures which are felt in your stomach as well as your head - by this I mean an indescribable - in descript - emotional memory which can be universally attached to a piece of work."
